THE SCHOOL

WYCE employs 6 Qualified Teachers, 5 Adult Classroom Assistants and 5 Young Classroom Helpers to help educate the 175 children attending our Early Years Centre and Primary School in Madina Salaam.

Our Classroom Assistants and Helpers all originate from the village which means that we are not only providing them with a reliable source of employment but, through their daily school attendance, our employees directly benefit from a high standard of education. Our goal is to introduce a new class of 3 year olds every year. In order to deliver an outstanding level of education, our classrooms contain a maximum of 25 pupils. When year groups are bigger than 25 attendees, another class is created on a double shift basis.

We are also providing a higher level of Teacher Training and Resources to enable every child to have an equal opportunity
and allow them to compete fairly in the 21st century.

Early Years Centre

We have built 2 good-quality Early Years Classrooms with tiled floors and internal flush toilets. Volunteers have created an 'adventure' play ground, built bantabas and planted trees and other ornamental bushes which are creating much needed shade.

The two Early Years Classrooms are a huge success. The work being covered by the Teaching Staff has been extremely effective and the end-of-year reports have been fully appreciated by the villagers.

We are proud to announce that after inspection, our Early Years Centre is now officially registered with the Gambian government.

At present, the Early Years Centre is borrowing 2 rooms out of the Clinic to use as classrooms. This is why, over the course of 2008, our main target is to raise £20,000 to build two extra classrooms, a head-teacher's office, staff room and a resources room. Once built, our Early Years Centre will be complete.

Primary School

It was a very exciting moment for Madina Salaam in September '06, when the first ever Early Years Class became the first ever Primary Class to start school in their OWN Village. History in the making!

As for the Early Years Centre, the Primary school had to borrow one room out of the clinic to use as classroom. Through 2008, we will also attempt to raise the funds necessary to start building a permanent site for our Primary School.

Our application for the registration has been submitted but our application will not be considered until the permanent school structure is completed.
