The Tree Nursery/Vegetable Garden Project is another success story. We are 'nursing' seedlings and young trees in preparation
for the WYCE Annual 'Tree-Planting' Event. Our trees, shrubs, and vegetables, are being sold at regular intervals to the villagers and other 'passers-by',
therefore also creating a small profit for the Project.

WYCE's Horticultural Programme
A great deal of work has been done with the Horticultural side of the Project. We have:
Created a vegetable and fruit garden in the school to provide fruits for the children
Planted various types of trees in the Health Centre garden.
Made plans for the re-organisation of the gardens in order to concentrate certain plants in particular areas
Developed the Tree Nursery at the Lodge site
Grown vegetables in the School Gardens
Grown fruit trees at the Early Years Centre site
Developed a Wood Lot in order to provide mature trees for future use within the Project
Created a garden to supply fruits and vegetables for the kitchen which is also an income-generating initiative.

The Annual Tree Planting Event
Every July/August WYCE holds a very special Tree Planting Ceremony in Madina Salaam, Combo South during
which 5,000 seeds and seedlings are planted. This is usually attended by distinguished guests of honour such
as; government officials, other like-minded agencies, and people from the village. These trees are planted
for the preservation of the eco-system in the Gambia, particularly in Madina Salaam. The tree and shrubs species
planted include: Mango, Orange Cashew, Rhun Palm, Oil Palm, Teak, Gmelina, Moringa, Baobab, Paw Paw etc.
All proceeds raised from the tree sponsorship go directly towards the provision of gainful educational opportunities
and primary healthcare facilities for the under-privileged children of Madina Salaam village for whom such an
opportunity would have remained an illusion without this support.
