The Lodge You will stay in one of our 8 two-bedded rooms fitted with mosquito nets, sink, flushable toilet and cold shower!
Timetable On your first full day, WYCE will take you on a tour of the Project Village. You will then discuss all the Projects taking place at that time, and then choose which of the Projects YOU feel will interest you most Click here for a sample timetable.
Clothes Washing You will be able to get your clothes washed in the village, but if you prefer to wash your own personal items you will need to bring some 'travel wash' and remember, there is no HOT water in Madina Salaam.
Food WYCE provides a varied Menu (suitable for Vegetarians) which does NOT just consist of just fish & rice! Click here for our sample menu.
Contact It is possible to use your own mobile phones if you have the 'Roaming facility' so please check with your service provider before you leave the UK. There are also some Internet cafes located in other towns and villages where the WYCE staff can take you at weekends. It is also possible to purchase a pre-paid SIM card that should work from The Gambia. SIM cards and Top-up cards are readily available at our WYCE Lodge.
'Free-Time' Activities You will be very welcome to join/help organise any of the many 'free-time' activities taking place in and around the Village. These will include: Football matches (Gambia v The Rest of the World !) Beach Volleyball Cricket Rounders Local craft skills Walking Singing and Dancing Djembe Drum playing Swimming (the sea is only 300m from your base camp!!) Beach B-B-Q's There are also many other local games and activities which can be played with the children of the Village (skipping, hide & seek, ball games etc. what games do YOU remember from your childhood why not bring them along!) Click here to see some of the wonderful places to visit Daylight hours are quite constant in The Gambia and start with the sunrise at 7.30am (which you really should try to catch at least once!) and end at 7.30pm (which you will definitely catch more than once!) There is no main electricity supply to the Village Madina Salaam. WYCE does however have a generator on site but it usage will be very limited. This therefore means that apart from a few solar lights, oil lamps and camp fires, there will be no other source of lighting throughout the village (what a brilliant setting to watch the stars and listen to the sound of drums!). You will soon enough realise that, without the powers of TVs and computers, you will have a great deal of 'leisure' time on your hands at the end of each day. |
